Why You May Want to Rethink Your “Go It Alone” Strategy

I’m going to say something that will ruffle some feathers. Here it goes: hustle culture has done A LOT of damage.

How did we get here?

For the past few years, I’ve watched as experts encourage people to follow their dreams and build businesses. This is great, right? However, these same experts also encourage folks to work tirelessly, to hustle, if you will, while their counterparts sleep, and to be ready to go at it on their own, all the time, because “no one will understand your dream the way you do”.

There’s clearly something missing here.

Yes, it may be time to ditch hustle culture.

Listen, I’m all for working hard. But what about working smarter? What about encouraging people to connect with a team that can help them go farther?

We tell our children to learn to play well with others but as we grow older and “wiser” our actions say very loud and clear: “I can do this on my own.”  We have convinced ourselves that we do not need help. And what’s worse is that we call this independence and wear it like a badge of honor. Do not get me wrong: you can accomplish remarkable things on your own, but you can accomplish even more with a committed team with a shared vision.

Contrary to popular opinion, successful people do NOT know how to do everything. Nope. Successful people know WHO to ask for help. Do you take the time to leverage or build a team of people in your life that can support the pursuit of your goals? In business, your team might include employees, contractors, virtual assistants, mastermind groups, or business coach.  But don’t discount the folks in your life that are there to support you, encourage you, or even hold you accountable. Their presence matters.

On Engineer Your Success with Dr. James Bryant, I often talk about how being a leader does not have to be a solo job. You do not have to do it alone and if you want to accelerate your progress you must learn to tap into the power of your team.

I get it: leadership can be lonely. Don’t give into the idea that you have to do it all by yourself, because you don’t. Connect with people that want to see you win. Develop strategies that allow you to rest, care for yourself, and lead with a clear and level head so that your team knows the only way forward is together.
